Update: Couple Still Detained in Cancún Over Timeshare Dispute and Could Remain in Prison for at Least Six More Months

A few weeks ago, we published a blog post about a Michigan couple who were detained in Cancún due to a dispute with Palace Resorts over their timeshare membership. Today, we bring you an update on their case, based on testimonies from their daughter, who has shared the suffering they are enduring and new details that have emerged.

A Daughter’s Fight for Her Parents’ Freedom

Lindsey Hull, daughter of Christy and Paul Akeo, has been doing everything possible to draw the attention of U.S. authorities and the media. She has described her parents' experience in prison as "21 days of torture" and now faces the troubling possibility that they could remain incarcerated for at least six more months while the Quintana Roo prosecutor's office continues gathering evidence.

During this time, the couple has been subjected to deplorable conditions. Christy has lost 11 kilos due to a lack of proper food and has developed a severe rash that remains untreated. Additionally, communication with them is limited. Hull has only been able to speak with her stepfather once in three weeks and fears for their well-being.

The Dispute That Led to Their Imprisonment

The issue began when the Akeos disputed charges on their American Express credit card due to Palace Resorts' breach of contract. American Express ruled in their favor and refunded them $116,587, which seemed to settle the matter. However, the company filed a criminal complaint in Mexico, leading to an arrest warrant validated by INTERPOL.

Now, Palace Resorts is demanding $250,000, the signing of a confidentiality agreement, and public apologies, claiming that Paul and Christy Akeo are fully responsible for the situation. The company has even stipulated that if the couple speaks about the case after their release, they will owe one million dollars for each mention.

Avoid This Situation: Legally Cancel Your Timeshare

The Akeo case demonstrates how complicated and risky it can be to simply stop paying for a timeshare or dispute charges without having a legal cancellation in place. While some people manage to get refunds through credit card disputes, the reality is that the timeshare company may retaliate legally, as seen in this case.

If you're no longer happy with your timeshare and want to get rid of it, the best option is to do so legally, with the guidance of a specialist. At Mexican Timeshare Solutions, we offer a free consultation to evaluate your situation and find the best solution without putting your freedom or financial stability at risk. Plus, we don’t charge upfront—you only pay once your timeshare is officially canceled.
